Homeopathy on Trial

In August 06 TV and newspaper reports were full of reports of a Swiss study, published in the Lancet, which claimed to show that homeopathy had no effect except as a placebo. Since the publication, many scientific researchers and homeopaths have pointed out that the study was biased. The study chose 110 trials of homeopathy and 110 trials of orthodox drugs which is considered to be well run. From these the researchers took just 8 of the homeopathy trials and compared them with just 6 orthodox trials. So, not only was the sample involved very small, it was also very selective. One of the authors of the report also stated, at the outset, that he expected to find that homeopathy had no effect other than as a placebo. So ‘objective’ the study was not. There have, in fact, been many clinical trials which show the positive benefits of homeopathy. In fact, positive results were detailed in the Lancet in 1994 and 1997.
